ReCoil is a fast paced FPS where you use the recoil of your gun to traverse across the levels while avoiding hazards. The game was created by a six-person team in three months for our final project. I designed and coded the menu system along with all additional scripting that was added on top of the UFPS engine. I Concepted and modeled, rigged and textured the character Steele. I also created all the background buildings out of modular building pieces that I made. Along with designing, proxied and built the first level of the game. Along with the rest of the team we constantly tested and iterated the game, along with bringing in external play testers.

In ReCoil you use your shotgun to propel yourself through each level avoiding obstacles, turrets and high falls. Our biggest struggle with the game was trying to not make the game repetitive that the player is bored by the end of the game. So we came up with a couple simple solutions to solve this, first we made sure that there wasn’t one linear path the end of each level. This allowed the players to explore each level and take their own route instead of a route that we gave them. Second we added three cassette tapes in each level which the player can collect, expect that the cassettes are in difficult spots to get so the player has work to get them. Finally we slowly introduced different types and uses for obstacles that way there was something fresh and new in every level.

Through testing we found that some players where really good at the game others that where not. Still both groups found the game fun and all testers where determined to beat the obstacles that they where stuck on and when they over came the obstacles they wanted to beat the next one too.

Steele Art

The original idea for the characters was to have them all with taller legs than upper bodies. This art style still made it into the game, but it wasn't as exaggerated in the end.
